Horses’ Neighs

2023-2024

Horse racing in northern Iran—Gonbad, Bandar Torkaman, and Agh Ghala—functions less as a sporting event than as a gathering point. As the races unfold, attention shifts to the spectators who bet, wait, calculate, and observe one another.

This project documents the informal betting culture surrounding these tracks, where economic uncertainty shapes behavior and expectation. For many participants, betting offers a brief sense of control within uncertain circumstances.

Photographed over multiple seasons, Horses’ Neighs moves away from the spectacle of the race to focus on the social space around it.
